As you are reading this, 200 million emails are been written and sent right at this moment. You could have just got one or two, right now.
With email marketing on the rise, businesses feel like the soda cans stacked up together on a supermarket shelf.
Which ones get noticed? Who gets to make the sale?
Email marketing does look intimidating at first. However, once you get the hang of it, it flows easily. Here is good, practical advice to rock your email marketing:
Make your Email Signup Button Visible
Don’t push it at the end of your homepage or hide it deep inside your website. If you want to build your email list, throw subtlety out of the window. It should be out there. Right there on the top or on the right-hand side of your website. Many bloggers also use pop-ups to get visitors to subscribe. While this is often a little annoying, but you can still make it less annoying with a few strategic tips. For an added measure, add a subscribe button on your social media pages.
It would be wise to keep the signup form simple and short. Don’t go asking for their favorite colors and more. Just a name and email address would do.
Offer a Freebie
Free Samples? Who can pass them over? Use a freebie to attract your visitors to get them to signup. Make it relevant. Something that your readers might be looking for. If you’re a health coach, offer a printable weekly meal plan. Your freebie is a window for potential clients to see what you can offer. So, make sure it offers the best view of your business.
Send regular emails
Take out the time to plan, write, design and send your newsletter. Create a schedule. Do a weekly newsletter or even a monthly one. If your content is time sensitive, then even a daily one would do. Once you have created your schedule, stick to it. Even if you had a busy month or a really really quiet one, just send the email. You don’t want your clients to forget about you. Or worse, label you as spam.
Make it Personal, Make it Interesting
Don’t just start off without greeting your reader. Make it personal but adding their name after the standard greeting. It gives the feeling that you are talking to them directly.
Your subject line should get attention. Get the reader to open the email. Research shows that short subject line (less than 49 characters long) get opened quicker. Long subject lines could get you more response, and boost clicks. Decide what you want. Just, limit your subject line to no more than 70 characters. Your real story should be in the email and not the subject.
Make it mobile friendly
As smart phones have become the new way of life, most people open their emails on their mobiles. When you send your emails, make sure they are mobile friendly. A good way to do that is to add your email address to your email list. Open your emails on your mobiles to check how well are they working.
Content is King
We’ve all heard this. It’s especially true now. I get thousands of emails monthly, from people I subscribed to. But I only check a select few. I know those few always have something interesting or valuable to share. Make sure your clients notice you even after the honeymoon period. It’s very easy to get caught up with email marketing, once you see the results. But sending too many emails could be seen as spammy. Stick to your schedule and only send a few rare surprise emails when you really have to offer the moon.
Know the Spam Line
It can be a thin line to spam. Know the rules. Be respectful to your readers. They allowed you space in your inbox. Don’t overstretch your place. You can send bulk emails but only to people who gave you the permission to send them emails. When you ask them for their email addresses, mention that they will be receiving a weekly/monthly newsletter.
Add an unsubscribe button to your emails, so that readers can unsubscribe easily. It sucks. Don’t take it personally.
