What’s not to love about instagram? But with over 1 billion active users, it’s hard to be seen. Chances are at this point, you’ve either tried instagram and couldn’t get the hang of it or you’ve been too afraid to jump in. You may find yourself asking “what do I even post?” or “how do I grow?” and maybe even “what is a hashtag?” I’ve got your back. Don’t you worry! I’m giving you my top 5 tips to get your first (or next) 1k real followers on instagram.

#1 Get a Business Account

If you’re serious about getting yourself or your business noticed and growing on instagram you need a business account so that:

  • People can contact you:

Instagram “DM’s” can go unnoticed. They can end up in a spam folder if you don’t follow each other, your message will be limited to 500 characters, and it’s just not the most convenient or professional way to stay in contact. Plus if you’re building a list (which I hope you are) you need email addresses not instagram handles. An instagram business account will allow people to contact you directly via email or phone number.

  • You can access analytics

If you’re going to seriously dive in to instagram, you need to learn what is working for YOUR audience and what is not. The only way to do that is to look at the data. The data doesn’t lie! It will help you understand which posts are performing best, how much your followers are engaging and how many people have clicked to your website.

  • You can easily promote your posts

By clicking on the ‘Promote’ button under your photo you can promote your posts to reach even more people right inside the app.

#2 Create a memorable bio & profile

Who are you? Why should someone follow you? This part is crucial to not only let newcomers know a little of what to expect from you but it’s also a way to connect, inspire and entertain them right from the beginning. There’s 3 other important areas to put your own spin on, make the most of these:

Username: Far too often I see people getting stuck on this step because their name is more than likely already taken on instagram so they use something like “ILoveCats123.”

This step is more important than people realize. You want people to not only easily be able to find you on instagram by the name they know you by but to also remember you by your name and not “that lady who loves cats” (lol).

Profile photo: A clear sharp image of yourself is always best. People will remember you by your face. If you are not the brand then a clear photo of the logo works best!

Website: The ONLY place you can add a clickable link. Use this space wisely! I recommend setting up a linktree account so you don’t have to choose what the most important place to direct traffic to should be. With linktree you can add multiple links and people can choose where they want to go. Cool right?

Bio:

Sell yourself by creating captivating copy. Tell you audience in 150 characters who you are and why they want to follow you. Let your personality shine through here! Figure out who your ideal follower/customer is and write a bio that appeals directly to them.

Include a call to action. Tell them why they should click on your link. Include emojis. They’re bright and draw attention to that section.

#3 What Is your Niche’?

We all have a niche’.

What industry do you work in (this is big if you are a brand or you sell products to consumers)?

What are your hobbies (if you travel a lot and your posts will be travel related then that is your niche’.

Once you figure out what that is, stay focused on appealing to that audience and being consistent about it.

If your niche is travel and you start posting about fitness, you not only aren’t appealing to the right audience but you will quickly lose interest for lack of consistency.

If you are in the health and fitness industry you should focus on posting a lot of healthy lifestyle photos. Workout photos, healthy recipes etc. These things will appeal to others who are interested in the health and fitness industry.

#4 Hashtags

Whats a hashtag?

It’s the “#” symbol. If you’ve dabbled in the instagram world you may have stumbled across them by now. But what’s the purpose?

Hashtags are what will get your photos seen by people who are not already following you, and that is of course the goal right? To make new connections, find new customers and get new followers.

You need to be using hashtags on every post to grow your brand and reach outside your connections. I could go on about hashtags all night. There is so much you can learn, but that’s a whole separate blog in itself.

The most important thing you know is to use them with every post. You can put them directly in your caption (especially if you are new to instagram).

After you’ve written a captivating or inspiring caption for your photo. Think of about 15 things relevant to that post. Let’s just say it’s a workout photo. Hashtags that are popular and would apply to this are ¬†something like this:

#workout #gym #fitness #fit #fitlife #gymlife #fitmom #healthy #workitout

#5 Consistency

And last but definitely not least…

Consistency. I can’t tell you how many friends I’ve talked to that say “I tried instagram, it doesn’t work.” But they didn’t do it consistently.

You can’t make one post a week for 2-3 weeks and say it doesn’t work. Make content and post consistently.

Try posting every day for 30 days and implement these tips I’ve shared and see what it does for your instagram.

People want to follow people who are active. This doesn’t mean post like crazy (you CAN post too much). Keep it to no more than once a day and no less than 3 times a week and you will get results.

Content is king!

Let me know how these tips have helped you. And don’t forget to download my 30 day instagram content plan so you will have no excuse not to post everyday.
